Stroed Product Pest (SPP)

1. Common SPPs Found in Food Commodities

Most common pests include:

non-vertebrate pests : beetles (grain weevil, rust-red flour beetle), moth (Indianmeal moth, Mediterranean moth etc.), mites etc..
vertebrate pests : birds (house sparrow, feral pigeon etc.) and rodents.

Common SPP found:

 2. SPP Management Approach

2.1 Highlights

Routine check (and/or monitoring) for potential harbourage of pest is an integral part of the pest management program particular for large-scale raw material storage (i.e. silo) and processing lines (in areas where food particles may be trapped).
Prompt response to enquiry and complaint etc. is a critical part in sustaining quality service especially when pest infestation is spotted in the premises.
Precision treatment – aims at localized infestations against specific pest that may occur from time to time; minimizes unnecessary contamination to non-infested areas and/or goods; also reduces excessive preparation work by client prior to treatments.
Effective communication & cooperation is vital for successful implementation of pest management program.

2.2 Key Components of SPP Management Program for Food Industries

   Inapection / Monitoring.
   Determination of infestation level.
Application of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies & tactics.
   Evaluation and program update.

2.3 Key Steps of SPP Management Program

Inspection of premises particular at “high risk areas” or goods with “high risk of contamination”.
Identification of pest, pest damage and potential location for infestation.
Review storage condition, design as well as structure proofing facilities.
Implementation of IPM application procedures (e.g. mechanical control, prompt disposal of infested goods etc.).
   Report with recommendations if necessary.
   Evaluation of treatments.
   Communication with customer.

3. Features of Pest Control & Management Program

Modern pest monitoring technology for various SPP species that generally occurred in the vicinity of food storage, establishment and processing plant etc.
Advance control technology for SPP including use of pheromone traps, fumigation (use of relative low toxic fumigant such as mixture of carbon dioxide and phosphine) and ULV fogging with food grade insecticide.
Effective rodent monitoring and control system to be applied both indoor and outdoor areas of the food premises by either mechanical devices or chemical bait stations.
Effective bird control facilities for both outdoor or indoor areas with modern design to match with unique function or decoration and achieve optimal control result.
